Lidl Ladies NFL Division 2 Round 1. 21.1.2024
January 22, 2024
Tipperary 1-4 Cavan 0-2
Tipperary’s ladies footballers played Cavan in Lacken, Cavan in their opening game of the Lidl National League Division 2 on Sunday, when the long trip north was rewarded with a valuable win for the Premier County team.
The game was dictated by atrocious weather conditions and a very heavy pitch.
Cavan opened the scoring after eight minutes through Deirbhile McCaffrey.
Tipperary had a lot of possession but failed to take their scoring opportunities.
They equalised after 21 minutes with a point from play from Aishling Moloney.
A free from Emma Morrissey gave Tipp the lead after 26 minutes.
Scores were hard to come by, as the velocity of the wind increased.
Cavan equalised just before half time through Niamh McCorry, to leave the teams deadlocked at 0-2 each at the break.
Tipperary started the second half very brightly but Emma Morrissey missed a goal chance in the opening minutes. However, she followed up with a point from a free, closely followed by a goal after five minutes from a close range free.
At this stage Tipp were dominant all over the field and made their superiority count with an excellent point from play by Aishling Moloney after eight minutes.
However, Tipp will be disappointed that this was their final score of the game. They had eight wides in the final twenty minutes.
While Tipp never looked in danger of losing the match, they will have to improve significantly in their forward play if they are to stay in contention for league honours.
Tony Smith deputised for Peter Creedon as manager for the day, as Creedon is suspended for six weeks from the 2023 championship.
Tony was delighted that the girls showed great resilience in terrible weather conditions.
They face another long trip north this Sunday when they head to Omagh to play Tyrone.
