Kerry hold off Tipperary fightback in tight U16 contest
Kerry edged a determined Tipperary side by 3-7 to 2-7 in an absorbing Round 3 clash of the MLGFA U16 Sharon O’Keeffe competition, with late scores proving decisive in a closely fought encounter.
Tipperary made an encouraging start, with Róisín Browne opening the scoring with a point from play before adding a free to settle her side early. However, Kerry quickly turned the game on its head with two well-taken goals from Aoife Wright and Emma Ní Ruairc, putting the visitors firmly in control.
Despite the setback, Tipperary responded positively. Points from Anna Leahy and Emma O’Shea helped keep them in touch, and a key moment arrived midway through the half when Leahy won a penalty. Sophie Strang stepped up to convert, raising a green flag that reinited Tipperary’s challenge.
Kerry, though, maintained their attacking threat and added a third goal before the break to hold a 3-2 to 1-4 advantage at half-time.
Tipperary emerged with renewed purpose after the interval and were rewarded when Ella O’Donnell made an immediate impact off the bench with a point. Moments later, Browne struck for a well-taken goal from play to leave just a goal between the sides and set up a tense final quarter.
Browne continued to lead the Tipperary charge, converting frees to keep the scoreboard moving, but Kerry found a reliable outlet in Holly Costello, whose accuracy from placed balls proved crucial. Costello’s composure under pressure saw her land a series of important frees, alongside a point from play, to keep Kerry ahead.
Tipperary pressed hard in the closing stages and reduced the gap to the minimum, but a late free from Costello ultimately sealed the win for Kerry, who held on for a three-point victory.
While Tipperary will be disappointed not to complete the comeback, they can take encouragement from a strong second-half display and the leadership shown by Browne, while Kerry will be pleased with their clinical finishing and ability to see out a tight contest
