Tipperary fall short despite battling display against clinical Kerry

Madigan impresses with six points as Premier girls show spirit but struggle to contain Kerry firepower

Tipperary produced a spirited and determined performance but were ultimately outgunned by a sharp-shooting Kerry side, who claimed a 4-15 to 0-12 victory in Round 3 of the MLGFA U16A Championship.

Facing a Kerry attack in top form, Tipp found themselves under early pressure as the visitors struck for a goal inside the opening minutes. Despite that setback, the Premier girls responded well, with Farrah Madigan settling them into the contest with a series of fine scores.

Madigan was Tipperary’s standout performer throughout, finishing with an excellent six-point tally, five from play, and consistently carrying the fight to the Kerry defence. She was well supported by Aobhinn Harris and Emily Walsh, who also chipped in with important scores.

However, Kerry’s clinical edge in front of goal proved decisive. Casey Shanahan was particularly dangerous, hitting a first-half hat-trick that helped the visitors build a 2-8 to 0-8 lead by the interval, despite Tipp’s best efforts to stay in touch.

Tipperary emerged for the second half with renewed intent and continued to work hard across the field. The introduction of Emma Cullinan added fresh energy, and she made her mark with a well-taken point as Tipp looked to reduce the deficit.

Defensively, there were strong moments from Aoife Ryan and her backline unit, who battled throughout under sustained Kerry pressure. But Kerry’s pace and precision in attack continued to create openings, with further goals after the break putting the result beyond doubt.

While Tipperary will be disappointed not to have raised a green flag, there were plenty of positives in their performance. Their work rate, resilience and scoring from play — particularly through Madigan — showed clear promise.

In the closing stages, Tipp continued to press and were rewarded with late points, but Kerry finished strongly to underline their advantage and close out the game.

Scorers (Tipperary): Farrah Madigan 0-6, Aobhinn Harris 0-2, Emily Walsh 0-1, Emma Cullinan 0-1, others 0-2.

Despite the result, this was a performance full of heart from Tipperary, and one that will stand to them as they look ahead to their remaining fixtures.
