Tipperary prove far too strong for Limerick in Sharon O’Keeffe clash
Tipperary 2-11
Limerick 1-01
Tipperary turned in a polished and powerful display to account for Limerick in Round 4 of the Sharon O’Keeffe U16 competition on Saturday last, with the Premier girls producing an excellent team performance to claim a deserved win.
From the throw-in, Tipperary looked sharp and well organised, settling into the game quickly and taking control around the middle of the field. Their movement, work-rate and ability to use possession intelligently gave them the upper hand throughout, while at the back they defended with real discipline and composure.
There was a lively edge to the Tipperary attack all through the hour and once they found their range, there was no stopping them. Kitty O’Meara was a constant threat inside and finished with 1-01, while Anna Leahy weighed in with 0-03 in a fine individual display.
Tipperary also got valuable scores from Sinéad Nugent, Lauren Trehy and Faye O’Dwyer as the scoreboard kept moving in the right direction for the Premier girls. The spread of scorers was one of the most encouraging aspects of the performance, reflecting the teamwork and confidence throughout the side.
What will have pleased the management just as much, however, was the work done without the ball. Tipperary hunted in packs, worked hard to close down space and gave Limerick very little room to settle. Their defence remained solid throughout, and goalkeeper Maeve Cummins was alert when needed, pulling off an important save to help keep Tipperary firmly in control.
Around the middle third, Tipperary’s energy and willingness to break forward ensured they kept the pressure on, and they were clinical when scoring chances came their way. Even when Limerick did manage to get on the scoreboard, Tipperary responded well and never allowed the visitors to build any real momentum.
By the closing stages, the result was beyond doubt, with Tipperary continuing to play with purpose and discipline right to the final whistle. It was a very assured display and one that should give this group plenty of confidence as the competition moves on.
There was plenty to admire in the Tipperary showing — strong defending, hard running, good support play and, most importantly, a real cutting edge in attack. On this evidence, they look to be building nicely.
Tipperary scorers:
Kitty O’Meara 1-01, Anna Leahy 0-03, Sinéad Nugent 0-02, Lauren Trehy 0-02, Faye O’Dwyer 0-02.
