Tipperary fall just short after thrilling battle with Tyrone

Tipperary 5-05
Tyrone 5-10

Tipperary were left to reflect on a narrow defeat after a hugely entertaining and dramatic contest with Tyrone in Round 7 of Lidl NFL Division 2, with the visitors just doing enough to edge a high-scoring encounter on a 5-10 to 5-05 scoreline.

This was a game that ebbed and flowed throughout, with both sides carrying serious attacking threat, but Tyrone’s stronger finish ultimately proved decisive after Tipperary had put themselves in a promising position by half-time. Tipperary led 3-04 to 1-05 at the break, having produced a sharp and clinical opening half, but Tyrone came with real force after the restart and gradually turned the tide.

Tipperary made a lively start and quickly settled into the contest. Emma Morrissey opened their account before Lily Maher struck for an early goal, giving the home side a valuable lift. Tyrone responded with scores of their own, but Tipperary continued to ask questions in attack and looked dangerous every time they ran directly at the opposition defence.

A major moment in the first half came when Anna-Rose Kennedy found the net, helping Tipperary establish a solid foothold in the game. Niamh Martin then added another excellent goal late in the half, and with Emma Morrissey also contributing important points, Tipperary took real momentum into the interval with a five-point lead.

Tyrone, however, emerged for the second half with renewed intensity and quickly made their move. Goals from Aoife Horisk and Chloe McCaffrey, followed by another major score from Sorcha Gormley, swung the momentum sharply in the visitors’ favour and turned what had looked like a strong Tipperary position into a fierce battle.

To Tipperary’s credit, they refused to fade and continued to battle right to the end. Emma Morrissey added another point from play to keep the scoreboard moving, while substitutes made an impact when introduced. Clara English came off the bench to score an important goal midway through the second half, giving Tipperary renewed hope just when Tyrone seemed to be taking control.

There was still more drama to come late on when Anna Carey found the net in the closing stages, reducing the gap and ensuring Tipperary stayed alive in the contest deep into stoppage time. But Tyrone responded with a late point to keep daylight between the sides and close out the win.

Although the result did not go Tipperary’s way, there was plenty to admire in their performance. Their first-half display was full of energy and attacking intent, while their refusal to give in when Tyrone surged back showed plenty of character and determination.

Five goals is always a strong attacking return, and Tipperary will certainly take encouragement from the threat they carried throughout the contest. On another day, small moments could easily have swung the result in their favour. While Tyrone finished the stronger, Tipperary showed enough quality over the hour to suggest there are plenty of positives to bring forward.
