Tipperary rally falls just short as Kerry hold on in tense championship battle

Kerry 1-6 Tipperary 0-7

Tipperary produced a spirited second-half comeback but were left frustrated as Kerry held on for a two-point victory in their MLGFA TG4 Senior Championship Round 2 clash.

After a difficult opening half in which Kerry built a six-point interval lead, Tipperary showed real character after the restart. They outscored Kerry 0-6 to 0-2 in the second half, with Emma Morrissey, Lauren Cunningham, Kirsty Crotty Ryan, Nora Martin and Niamh Martin all helping to drag the Premier County back into contention.

However, Jadyn Lucey’s first-half goal for Kerry ultimately proved decisive as the Kingdom survived Tipperary’s late pressure to win 1-6 to 0-7.

Kerry made the brighter start, with captain Síofra O’Shea opening the scoring from a free after just over two minutes. Tipperary had to absorb early pressure, with Kerry creating chances but also registering wides through Rachel Dwyer and the team effort that followed.

Tipperary got off the mark in the sixth minute when Sarah English split the posts from play, levelling the game at 0-1 apiece. It was an important score for Tipp, but Kerry soon regained control, with Lucey pointing from play before O’Shea added another free to move the visitors two clear.

Tipperary had opportunities to respond, particularly from placed balls, but Emma Morrissey was twice narrowly off target from frees in the first half. Those misses proved costly as Kerry continued to make better use of their scoring chances.

Mary O’Connell stretched Kerry’s advantage with a point from play in the 21st minute, and although she then sent an effort wide, the Kingdom were beginning to establish a foothold. The key moment arrived in the 27th minute when Lucey struck for the game’s only goal, finishing from play to put Kerry 1-4 to 0-1 ahead.

Tipperary goalkeeper Lauren Fitzpatrick then produced an important save just before half-time to prevent further damage. That stop ensured the home side remained within reach at the break, though Kerry still carried a commanding 1-4 to 0-1 lead into the interval.

The second half told a very different story. Tipperary returned with more urgency and purpose, and Morrissey opened their account after the restart with a free in the 36th minute. That score settled Tipp, and they began to ask far more questions of the Kerry defence.

Lauren Cunningham followed with a point from play two minutes later, reducing the gap to four. Kerry introduced Leah McMahon for Rachel Dwyer, while Tipp continued to press forward in search of momentum.

Kirsty Crotty Ryan then landed a fine point from play in the 47th minute to make it 1-4 to 0-4, and suddenly Tipperary were right back in the contest. Kerry captain O’Shea responded with a point from play, but Nora Martin immediately answered for Tipp, keeping the pressure on.

Tipperary also turned to their bench, with Angela McGuigan replacing Anna Carey and Ava Ryan later coming in for Kate Cashman. The changes helped maintain Tipp’s energy as the game entered its closing stages.

Morrissey then added a point from play in the 55th minute, cutting Kerry’s lead to two points at 1-5 to 0-6. At that stage, the momentum was with Tipperary, and the comeback looked very much alive.

Kerry, though, found a crucial score when Aisling O’Connell pointed from play in the 60th minute, pushing the gap back out to three. Tipperary refused to go away, and Niamh Martin replied with a point from play in the 63rd minute to leave just two between the sides.

There was still time for late drama, but Kerry managed to see the game out. For Tipperary, the final whistle brought disappointment, but also evidence of the team’s resilience after a slow start.

The first-half deficit ultimately proved too much to overturn, with Lucey’s 1-1 and O’Shea’s three points central to Kerry’s victory. For Tipperary, the spread of second-half scorers was encouraging, with Sarah English, Morrissey, Cunningham, Crotty Ryan, Nora Martin and Niamh Martin all on target.

Tipperary will look back on the opening half with regret, particularly the concession of Lucey’s goal and missed chances from frees. Yet their second-half performance showed the fight and quality in the side, as they pushed Kerry all the way to the final whistle.
