Moyle Rovers produced a superb second-half comeback to edge out Cahir
by the narrowest of margins and claim the Tipperary LGFA Camida Adult League Division 1 title on a 0-11 to 2-4 scoreline after a gripping final on Sunday evening.
Cahir looked to have one hand on the trophy after a dream start which saw them hit the net twice inside the opening three minutes. Shannon Morrissey opened the scoring with a well-taken goal before Lexie Ferris struck almost immediately afterwards to leave Moyle Rovers stunned early on.
Despite the disastrous opening, Moyle Rovers gradually settled into the contest and began to work their way back into the game through patient attacking play and strong defending.
Aedin McCormack opened their account from a free before Hazel Brennan and Ava Wall added fine points from play to cut the deficit. Lexie Ferris responded with a free for Cahir, but another late Moyle Rovers free ensured just three points separated the sides at the interval, with Cahir leading 2-1 to 0-4.
Cahir extended their advantage shortly after the restart through a Siobhan Reidy free and another point from play, but Moyle Rovers then took complete control during a dominant spell in the third quarter.
Aedin McCormack was hugely influential throughout and her scores, coupled with excellent points from Hazel Shanahan, Eabha Dolan and Róisín McGrath, swung momentum firmly in favour of the South champions.
Moyle Rovers’ pace and movement caused increasing problems for the Cahir defence and, crucially, they continued to chip away at the deficit with a steady stream of points while also keeping Cahir scoreless for long periods.
Amy O’Connor briefly halted the Moyle Rovers momentum with a late point for Cahir, but by then the champions-elect had already edged in front.
A nervy finish followed, but Moyle Rovers held firm in the closing stages to seal a hard-earned one-point victory and cap an impressive turnaround after their difficult start.
For Moyle Rovers, Aedin McCormack delivered an outstanding performance and finished as top scorer, while Hazel Brennan, Hazel Shanahan and Róisín McGrath also impressed.
Cahir will undoubtedly rue their missed opportunity after such a blistering opening, though Shannon Morrissey, Lexie Ferris and Siobhan Reidy all contributed strongly over the hour.
Scorers – Moyle Rovers: Aedin McCormack 0-5, Hazel Brennan 0-1, Ava Wall 0-1, Hazel Shanahan 0-1, Eabha Dolan 0-1, Róisín McGrath 0-1, another 0-1.
